FUNCTION: The High-Temperature/High-Pressure Consistometer measures cement slurry viscosity or consistency under simulated well pressure and temperature conditions. Its primary function is to determine the maximum available pumping time of a cement slurry before the slurry reaches an unpumpable consistency before setting. While designed for cement slurries, the effects of pressure, time, and temperature can also be observed for other fluids, emulsions, dispersions, or slurries under static or dynamic conditions.
OPERATION: The cement slurry is stirred in a slurry cup placed in a pressure chamber while heat and pressure are applied to simulate well conditions. The consistency of the slurry inside the cup is measured by a potentiometer mounted on the shaft of the slurry paddle. As the slurry thickens, the drag on the paddle is transferred to the potentiometer, which is calibrated to translate drag or torque into a voltage signal.
